MediaTek has just unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro – the company’s first 2nm chipset and the first based on Arm’s next-generation CPU and GPU designs. It offers significant performance improvements across the board, with a particular focus on AI computing.

The CPU layout has been redesigned – it now features two Ultra CPU cores instead of one smaller Pro core. The exact configuration is: 2x Arm C2 Ultra + 3x C2 Pro + 3x C2 Pro (clock speeds are not yet known). The CPU promises 17% higher single-core performance and 37% higher efficiency. For multithreaded tasks, performance is improved by 15% and efficiency by a remarkable 61%.

The GPU is a Mali-G2 Ultra NX with support for gaming at over 185 FPS. Peak performance is 27% higher, ray tracing is 18% faster, and energy efficiency has been improved by 24%. Neural graphics rendering enables higher super-resolution graphics.

The Dimensity 9600 Pro features 16 MB of L3 cache and 10 MB of SoC cache. It supports both LPDDR5X and LPDDR6 RAM (33% faster, but also more expensive) as well as UFS 5.0 storage.

The MediaTek NPU 1090 doubles the INT4 performance of the NPU 990 in the Dimensity 9500. It also offers 55% higher token generation per watt and 51% faster pre-filling (reading the prompt). A hardware compression engine is provided for the KV cache.

The Dimensity 9600 Pro allows the ISP direct access to the NPU for processing photos and videos. It supports sensors up to 200 MP and can record videos up to 8K at 60 fps. The video decoding engine now supports VVC (also known as H.266).

One of the first smartphones with the Dimensity 9600 Pro will be the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max; more will follow. Whether MediaTek is also working on a standard Dimensity 9600 without the “Pro” designation is not yet known.
