Apple releases iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 with Siri AI and Liquid Glass update

Apple today released iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, the latest operating system updates for iPhone and iPad. The software is free for all compatible devices and can be downloaded wirelessly via Settings > General > Software Update. Due to high demand on the release day, it may take several minutes for the updates to become available to all users.

iOS 27 can be installed on all iPhones running iOS 26, including the iPhone SE 2 and the iPhone 11 series and later models. iPadOS 27 is available for the iPad Pro (2nd generation and later), the iPad Air (4th generation and later), the iPad mini (6th generation and later), and the iPad with the A16 chip.

The updates introduce Siri AI, the smarter and more powerful version of Siri. After the update, you may need to register to use Siri AI. You can do this in the Settings app under “Siri.” In addition to Siri AI and a dedicated Siri app, there’s also a redesigned Liquid Glass interface and numerous new Apple intelligence features.

To use the new AI features, you need an iPhone with Apple Intelligence. This includes the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, all iPhone 16, iPhone 17, and iPhone 18 models. For iPad, Apple Intelligence is available on M-series devices and the iPad mini A17 Pro. Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features are currently free, but Apple may introduce fees for more intensive use in the future.

Siri AI (All iPhone 16 models and newer, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max)

• A more powerful and conversational version of Siri is being rolled out to all users. It helps you find what you’re looking for and get more done by using features like contextual understanding, app actions, screen recognition, and access to comprehensive knowledge.
• The new iOS 27 speech output offers more expressive and natural voices and allows you to customize expressiveness and speaking pace to personalize Siri using powerful on-device models on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro (and newer models).
• The dedicated Siri app offers an easy way to continue existing conversations or start new ones, and securely syncs your conversations with iCloud across all your Apple devices.
• Siri mode in the camera integrates visual intelligence into the camera app. This allows you to ask questions and perform actions with objects in front of you, such as splitting a bill or getting nutritional information for a dish.
• With “Type with Siri,” you can create drafts, edit your texts, or get feedback from Siri virtually anywhere you type. In Messages and Mail, Siri personalizes your writing style based on your relationships, using unique phrases and punctuation you’ve previously used in conversations with those people.

iOS 27 Photos

• With the iOS 27 feature “Spatial Recomposition”, you can adjust the image composition after taking the picture by virtually changing the camera position.
• The iOS 27 tool “Expand” intelligently stretches images beyond their edges with realistic fill, allowing you to straighten horizons, change aspect ratios, or add more space around a subject.
• The “Clean Up” function supports the removal of even larger objects with more realistic, high-quality results. You can choose between Quick mode for minor imperfections or High Quality mode for more complex edits.

iOS 27 Safari

• “Organize by Topic” uses Apple Intelligence to sort your tabs, analyze web pages, and automatically group similar tabs.
• “Notify me” can allow websites to regularly check for updates such as price changes and product availability.
• “Describe extension” allows you to create a custom extension in natural language to customize how you display or format website content.
• The brand-new Image Playground uses a new generative model to create high-quality images in virtually any style, including photorealistic renderings. You can edit your images using touch and natural language, and generate personalized lock screen wallpapers and contact posters with suggestions.
• With “Describe link”, you can create a link or optimize an existing one in natural language.

iOS 27 Homescreen

• Aggregated activity notifications combine related notifications from accessories into a single notification.
• Video descriptions for HomeKit Secure video recordings summarize what happens in a clip (for eligible iCloud+ subscribers).
• Camera Clip Search lets you find specific moments from your HomeKit Secure Video cameras by searching in the Home app or Spotlight (with an eligible iCloud+ subscription).
• The “Describe Event” feature in Calendar lets you create an event using natural language. Details such as time, location, invitees, and title are automatically filled in using Apple Intelligence.
• Suggestions in Mail help you take actions based on the context of your emails, such as providing directions to a restaurant you have booked.
• The call context feature in the phone app recognizes when you are talking to certain businesses and proactively displays relevant information from your apps, such as a verification code or reservation number.

iOS 27 Accessibility

• VoiceOver improvements include more detailed and context-aware image understanding for photos, charts, and screenshots; a dialogue-based feature that lets you ask questions about your screen or surroundings; and a new way to quickly get answers via an action button.
• The optimized screen magnifier offers visual support to visually impaired users through dialogue functions with a high-contrast user interface and natural voice control for zoom and other functions.
• The intelligent Accessibility Reader provides better text cleaning and formatting, optimizes images and tables, offers summaries on demand and translations.
• The flexible voice control allows you to navigate your device using voice commands by describing elements on the screen in your own words, such as “Tap the gear” or “Tap the button in the top right corner”.
• And much more, including additional options for creating and editing Genmoji, automatic proofreading, and a more precise dictation function with the built-in model on iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro models and newer.

iOS 27 Parental Controls

• The improved setup of new child accounts allows parents to select exactly the apps their children are allowed to access when setting up an iPhone.
• The “Ask before visiting” feature allows parents to approve each new website before their child can access it.
• Enhanced communication security features help intervene before children see violent or disturbing content in shared pictures and videos.
• Time limits help parents restrict their children’s screen time on apps for entertainment, games, and social media. The guidelines are based on expert research and tailored to the child’s age.
• Schedules allow parents to specify which apps their children are allowed to access at different times of day and on weekdays and weekends.
• The revised screen time settings offer parents a quick overview of their children’s device usage and allow them to adjust access with just a few clicks.

iOS 27 System Improvements

• Liquid Glass’s optimizations improve overall readability. A new slider in the settings allows for individual adjustment of the display, from ultra-clear to fully tinted.
• Faster system performance across various applications, including app launches, loading new photos into the photo library, and AirDrop transfers.
• The improved search delivers more relevant and comprehensive results in Spotlight, Photos, and Mail. – Connectivity Assist enables smoother transitions between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

And further improvements in apps and features, including enhancements for shared iCloud albums in Photos, a custom equalizer for AirPods, support for perimenopause and menopause in the cycle tracking of the Health app, and separate volume settings for alarms and timers.
