Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 and Z Fold8 Ultra with SD 8 Elite Gen 5 and larger batteries are here

Samsung describes the new Galaxy Z series as “its most complete product range to date,” implying that something was missing. That something is the wide foldable smartphone, which will simply be called the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8. It’s important to note that this is not the successor to the Z Fold7 – that would be the Z Fold8 Ultra.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 sits between the Flip and the original Fold in terms of performance. The Z Flip8 has a 4.1-inch cover display, the Z Fold8 a 5.5-inch display, and the Z Fold8 Ultra, at 6.5 inches, is the largest.

When folded, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 looks almost like a relic from a bygone era – its 5.5-inch portrait display with a 10:16 aspect ratio is reminiscent of today’s mini-phones. At 81.9 mm wide, it’s quite broad, but thanks to its slim profile of just 123.9 mm, the top edge of the screen is easily accessible. When folded, it’s 9.7 mm thick and weighs 201 g. In landscape mode, it offers a 16:10 aspect ratio, familiar from laptops and tablets (e.g., the Tab S11 Ultra), which is also excellent for watching videos and playing games.

When unfolded, the Z Fold8 offers a 7.6-inch display in a 4:3 aspect ratio. This is ideal for photos, which are typically in 4:3 format, and is also excellent for text-based applications such as reading documents, books, or text-heavy websites.

Here are some further details about the displays themselves. The external display is an LTPO OLED panel (1–120 Hz) with a resolution of 1248 x 1972 pixels. The internal display is also an LTPO OLED panel (1–120 Hz) with a resolution of 1848 x 2448 pixels. It achieves a brightness of up to 3000 cd/m² and features an anti-reflective coating. Both displays have very similar pixel densities of 428 ppi and 403 ppi, respectively.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 promises the best of both worlds – a 3:4 display is great for reading documents, books and text-heavy websites, while the 16:10 display is ideal for videos, games and scrolling through social media.

The smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, which we already know from the Galaxy S26 series. It features 12 GB of RAM in the 256 GB and 512 GB storage models and 16 GB of RAM in the 1 TB model.

The smartphone has a 4,800 mAh battery – larger than the 4,400 mAh battery of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7. It supports 45-watt fast charging (63% in 30 minutes) and 20-watt wireless charging (with reverse wireless charging).

The camera setup is more similar to that of the Z Flip than the Z Fold Ultra. It features a 50 MP main sensor (1.0 µm pixel size) with an f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization (OIS), and 2x in-sensor zoom. The ultra-wide camera also has a 50 MP sensor (0.7 µm pixel size) and an f/1.9 lens with a 120° field of view. There are two 10 MP selfie cameras (1.12 µm pixel size, f/2.2). The camera on the external display has an 85° lens, while the internal one has a 100° lens.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 is available in graphite, cream, and lavender. The fourth color, pistachio, is exclusive to Samsung.com. Pricing and release information can be found below.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra positions Samsung’s large, foldable, book-style smartphone in the same category as the S26 Ultra, as the “Ultra” label signifies its exceptional camera capabilities. The smartphone features a 200 MP main camera (0.6 µm pixels, f/1.7, OIS) with enhanced HDR functionality. It can record 8K video using the APV codec and allows direct use of Cine LUTs.

It upgrades the ultra-wide-angle camera with a new 50 MP sensor (0.7 µm, f/1.9, 120° FoV) that captures sharper landscape photos and gets close for macro shots.

The telephoto camera is unfortunately outdated, featuring a 10 MP sensor (1.0 µm) and a 3x zoom lens with f/2.4 and optical image stabilization (OIS). There are also two 10 MP selfie cameras – one on the external display with an 85° lens and an internal one with a 100° wide-angle lens (both with 1.12 µm pixel size and an f/2.2 aperture).

Like its sister model, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra will be equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy in all markets. The chipset now features an enlarged graphite foil for more effective heat dissipation. The smartphone comes with 12 GB of RAM in the 256 GB and 512 GB storage models and with 16 GB of RAM in the 1 TB variant.

Like its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold7, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra measures 72.8 mm wide and 8.9 mm thick when closed. When unfolded, it is slightly slimmer at 4.1 mm. The weight remains unchanged at 215 g.

These measurements conceal a significant improvement: the battery capacity has been increased to 5,000 mAh, a rise of almost 14% compared to the 4,400 mAh battery of the 2025 model. This is thanks to the first Samsung smartphone with a silicon-carbon (Si-C) battery – a long overdue step that should lead to significantly larger battery reserves in the future.

Another important upgrade is support for faster charging at 45 watts (previously 25 watts), which allows the battery to reach 67% in 30 minutes. Wireless charging has also been improved and now supports 20 watts (including reverse wireless charging). Samsung advertises a “new dual-path charging architecture” without going into further detail.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy and has a 5,000 mAh battery.

Both the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Z Fold8 Ultra ship with Android 17 and One UI 9. They support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0. The smartphones are IP48 dustproof and waterproof. The Ultra is available in Graphite, Cream, and Violet Shadow. The fourth color, exclusive to Samsung.com, is called Green Shadow.

A key innovation of this generation is Flex Titanium technology. It combines a titanium alloy film with a reinforced titanium plate. This makes the display more stable and better able to absorb shocks and pressure. At the same time, it becomes more resistant to wear and tear, which leads to the formation of the crease in the middle. The optimized hinge design ensures smoother and easier opening of the smartphone.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra are available for pre-order starting today. They include a six-month trial of Google AI Pro – including 5 TB of cloud storage; the regular price is $20 per month.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra is €100/$100/£100 more expensive than the Z Fold7, as Samsung has given the large, foldable, book-style smartphone the “Ultra” moniker. You can compare the new prices with those of last year’s Z models.

The base models come with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Samsung has largely discontinued the free storage upgrade, but we did find it available in at least one country. Therefore, check availability on your local Samsung.com website. Note that the pre-order period runs until the end of the month. In most countries we checked, there are discounts that partially or fully cover the cost of upgrading from 256GB to 512GB. However, the exact details vary by region.
