Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max with 200 MP telephoto lens and Pura 90s Pro now available worldwide

At the beginning of the year, Huawei introduced the Pura 90 Pro and the 90 Pro Max for the Chinese market. Now, the company is launching two more models in the “90” series, which feature largely identical hardware and will be available worldwide.

The two Pura 90s Pro models share many identical hardware components. The main differences lie in the screen size – 6.6 inches for the Pura 90s Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max – as well as features such as charging speed and telephoto cameras.

The Huawei Pura 90s Pro Max boasts its industry-first 200MP RYYB sensor – Huawei has long favored yellow subpixels over green ones. The large 1/1.28-inch sensor is paired with an f/2.6 lens offering 4x optical zoom.

Unlike last year’s Pura 80 Ultra, it features a fixed zoom and forgoes the complexity of interchangeable lenses. Thanks to real-time RAW processing, Huawei enables 20x telephoto video recording. The lens offers CIPA 7.0 stabilization (7 stops) and is also suitable for macro photography.

The main camera features a 1/1.28-inch sensor with 50 MP resolution. It’s one of the new LOFIC sensors, offering a wider dynamic range. And yes, it’s an RYYB sensor. This replaces the 1-inch sensor found in last year’s Pura 80 Pro and Ultra models. The main camera’s OIS-enabled lens has a ten-step adjustable aperture from f/1.4 to f/4.0. Additionally, a 40 MP ultra-wide-angle camera (RYYB sensor, f/2.2 lens) is included.

The Pro Max is a larger smartphone with a 6.9-inch display, another flat LTPO panel (1–120 Hz) with a resolution of 1308 x 2880 pixels, and the original Kunlun glass. Both displays feature a special optical design that reduces reflections by up to 70%. Additionally, a diamond-like carbon coating and silicon nitride ceramic are said to increase scratch resistance by 16 times and drop resistance by 25 times.

Huawei Pura 90s Pro

The Huawei Pura 90s Pro features a dedicated quad telephoto camera with a 50MP sensor. It has an OIS-enabled f/2.1 lens with a macro mode (5cm). The main camera is similar to that of the Pro Max and has a 50MP RYYB sensor (1/1.28 inch). However, it lacks LOFIC technology. The ultrawide camera is significantly simpler with 12.5MP (RYYB sensor, f/2.2 lens).

As mentioned previously, the Pro model features a 6.6-inch display. It’s an LTPO panel (1–120 Hz refresh rate) with a resolution of 1256 x 2760 pixels. The flat panel is protected by second-generation Kunlun glass.

Both phones are powered by the Kirin 9030S – a somewhat mysterious chip from HiSilicon that is brand new (the Pura 80 generation used the Kirin 9020).

A key new feature of this generation is 5G support, which was not present in previous Huawei models sold worldwide. eSIM is also now supported. Other wireless connectivity options include dual-band Wi-Fi 7 (be), Bluetooth 6.0 (LDAC and L2HC), and NearLink E2.0 (a Huawei-developed alternative to Bluetooth).

Both smartphones have 12 GB of RAM and are available with 256 GB or 512 GB of internal storage. They run EMUI 16 instead of standard Android. The new version is based on AOSP 16.

Both smartphones feature 6,000 mAh batteries for the Chinese and global markets. However, due to EU regulations, the capacity for devices sold in the EU is reduced to 5,500 mAh. The Pro Max model offers faster charging with 100 watts wired and 80 watts wireless, compared to the Pro model’s 66 watts and 50 watts, respectively.

As you may have noticed, Huawei has gone to great lengths to color-match the metal frames to the gradient finish on the back. This gives the vibrant colors, such as Orange Ocean, an extra boost of brilliance.

The smartphones are certified according to IP68 (up to 2 m depth) and IP69 (against water jets). The Pro Max model is slightly heavier at 230 g, but thinner at 8.1 mm, while the Pro model weighs 213 g and is 8.2 mm thick.

Prices

The Huawei Pura 90s Pro and Pro Max are being rolled out gradually. We’ve already found them in stores in Malaysia, and they should be available in Singapore soon. They aren’t yet listed on Huawei’s European websites, but the prices are already known. Additionally, a separate product launch for the Middle East will take place on July 16th.
