Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Ultra and Flip8: New images with Flex Titanium displays
Only one weekend left until Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked event, where the company is expected to unveil the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, Flip8, and the new Galaxy Watch models. Ahead of the event, further seemingly official renderings have surfaced, showcasing the entire product range.
The leak also reveals two online-exclusive color options for the wide Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Flip8. One of the seemingly official renderings shows the Galaxy Z Fold8, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and the Galaxy Z Flip8 side by side.
Meanwhile, another image shows the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra together with the Galaxy Watch9 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2. The leak gives us a glimpse of the pistachio color option for the Galaxy Z Fold8, which is available exclusively online, and the mint color option for the Galaxy Z Flip8.
Finally, the Samsung Galaxy Watch9 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 are featured together in another official-looking render image showcasing Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch range.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 / Ultra / Flip8 with new Flex Titanium displays
The Galaxy Z Fold7 featured the third generation of the Armor FlexHinge, which was 27% thinner and 43% lighter than the hinge of the Z Fold6. Now the company is introducing its next innovation, designed to make foldable displays even stronger and slimmer while minimizing crease: Flex Titanium.
This is just a preview of what’s to come next Wednesday with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, and Z Flip8. Flex Titanium technology promises an even better viewing experience for the new Z Folds while making the display more resistant to shocks and wear and tear from hundreds of thousands of folds and unfolds.
This new design consists of two main components: a titanium alloy foil and a flexible titanium plate. The newly developed titanium alloy foil is extremely thin – reportedly only one-third the thickness of a human hair – yet 20 times stiffer than the polymer foil used in older designs.
The titanium alloy film is located in the display module beneath the OLED panel and supports it during bending. Beneath this lies the titanium plate, which supports the entire display panel, resulting in a flatter, more uniform surface. This latter feature was already introduced in the Z Fold7. Samsung engineers have succeeded in eliminating further air gaps between the display and the support plate, thus achieving a tighter bond between the two.
“By integrating advanced microstructures into the folding area of the titanium plate, we have achieved flexibility while maintaining high durability. The combination of a high-resolution display architecture with new organic materials that maximize energy efficiency will further strengthen the competitiveness of the next generation of foldable Galaxy devices,” said Kyung-Jin Yoo, Corporate EVP and Head of the Mobile Display Product Development Team at Samsung Display.
The Flex Titanium design of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Fold8 Ultra, and Z Flip8 is based on the knowledge and innovations gained from seven generations of foldable Galaxy smartphones. Samsung has taken consumer feedback into account and focused on the most important factors that users care about.
Titanium is a difficult material to work with, but it is robust and lightweight, making it an ideal choice for foldable devices. However, integrating it into the thin and flexible structure of the display presented a significant engineering challenge.
The Galaxy Unpacked event in London will also unveil a new form factor—while Samsung is keeping the details under wraps, the event’s slogan is “A new form unfolds.” It is an open secret that this involves a wide, book-style foldable smartphone positioned somewhere between the Z Flip8 and the Z Fold8 – the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8.
