Redmi Note 17 with 7-inch display and Note 17 Pro with 9,000 mAh battery unveiled

Xiaomi has unveiled the Redmi Note 17 series in China, featuring significantly larger batteries than its predecessors and new chipsets. The Pro model is the smaller one with a 6.83-inch display – that’s right, this time it’s the smaller display.

The Redmi Note 17 boasts a massive 7-inch display. It’s a 120Hz OLED panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2396 pixels and a peak brightness of 1800 nits. The touchscreen remains responsive even with wet or gloved hands.

One might assume that such a large display would require a correspondingly large battery – and that would be absolutely correct! The smartphone boasts an 8,000 mAh battery, enabling up to 22 hours of video playback or up to 10 hours of outdoor navigation. This battery has an energy density of 821 Wh/L and is designed for 1,600 charge cycles. It supports 45-watt fast charging and 22.5-watt reverse charging, allowing it to share its capacity with other devices.

Speaking of wet hands: The Redmi Note 17 is IP65 certified and therefore only offers basic water protection – it cannot withstand complete submersion (for that, there’s the Pro model). The exterior is protected by Gorilla Glass 7i.

The smartphone is powered by the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 chipset, a 4nm chip (Samsung 4LPX) with two Cortex-A78 and six Cortex-A55 CPU cores, as well as an Adreno 613 GPU. It features 6/8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128/256 GB of UFS 2.2 storage. The SIM card slot also includes a microSD card slot for storage expansion.

Other notable features include an optical fingerprint reader, an infrared transmitter, Wi-Fi 5 (ac, dual-band) and Bluetooth 5.1 support, and NFC. The proximity sensor is virtual.

Redmi Note 17 Pro

The Redmi Note 17 Pro features a 6.83-inch display with a high-quality OLED panel. It displays 12-bit color (compared to 8-bit on the 7-inch display of the standard model) and offers a sharper image with a resolution of 1280 x 2772 pixels. The maximum brightness is 3500 nits. Thanks to DC dimming, the brightness can be reduced to 80 nits, and with 3840 Hz PWM dimming, it’s even possible to reduce the brightness to just 1 nit.

Although the Pro model is smaller, it has a larger battery – a 9,000 mAh silicon-carbon battery with a capacity of 1,600 charge cycles. It also supports 67-watt fast charging (as well as the same 22.5-watt reverse charging).

This model is equipped with a Snapdragon 6s Gen 4. It’s a similar 4nm chip (Samsung 4LPX) with Cortex-A78 and A55 CPU cores (this time in a 4+4 configuration) and a newer Adreno 710 GPU. The smartphone offers more RAM (8GB or 12GB) as well as 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of internal storage (UFS 2.2 for the 128GB variant, UFS 3.1 for the other two). However, there is no microSD card slot.

This model has similar features to the standard model, including an optical fingerprint reader, an infrared transmitter, Wi-Fi 5 (ac), Bluetooth 5.1 (AAC, LDAC), and NFC. The integrated ultrasonic proximity sensor is a particularly noteworthy feature. While the standard model only has one speaker, this model offers stereo sound.

The Redmi Note 17 Pro offers significantly better water resistance than its sister model – it is IP68-rated for immersion and IP66/IP69/IP69K-rated for protection against water jets. The exterior is protected by high-quality Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and has undergone drop tests from a height of 3 meters.

In terms of camera setup, the Redmi Note 17 Pro features a 50 MP rear camera module with a relatively small 1/2.76-inch sensor (0.64 µm pixel size) and an f/1.8 lens. A second rear camera module is present, but it’s only a 2 MP depth sensor. The front camera has an 8 MP sensor. Both cameras can only record video in 1080p at 30 frames per second.

The standard model has similar specifications, featuring a 50MP main camera (this time without a depth sensor) and an 8MP selfie camera. It’s worth noting that this is the Chinese model. Last year, the camera setup of the Redmi Note 15 for China differed significantly from the global version (which featured a 108MP main camera). The same applies to the Redmi Note 15 Pro, for both the Chinese and global markets.

Prices

The new Redmi phones are already available on Xiaomi’s Chinese website. Both models are currently on sale; the prices are listed below. Please note that the table shows the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP). However, there are discounts available: the Note 17 is 100 CNY cheaper, and the Pro model is 200 CNY cheaper.

The global release date for the Redmi Note 17 series is still unknown. However, as mentioned previously, there may be some significant differences in the hardware, particularly regarding the cameras and batteries.
