MediaTek Dimensity 8550 with LLM Booster and Gemini Nano V3 support is here
At the beginning of the year, MediaTek introduced the Dimensity 8500, a 4nm chipset (TSMC N4P) with eight Cortex-A725 processor cores and a Mali-G720 MC8 GPU. Now, the company is launching an updated version of this chip, the Dimensity 8550. The most significant new features are the LLM Booster and support for Google’s Gemini Nano V3, designed for use in smartphones. This new chip version continues to use the NPU 880.
The rest is identical. The CPU features a powerful Cortex-A725 core with a clock speed of up to 3.4 GHz. This core is equipped with 1 MB of L2 cache. The second cluster consists of three A725 cores, each with a clock speed of up to 3.2 GHz and 512 KB of L2 cache. Finally, there are four A725 cores with a clock speed of up to 2.2 GHz and 256 KB of L2 cache.
MediaTek Dimensity 8550 with 144 Hz support
The GPU is the aforementioned Mali-G720 MC8 with support for 1440p+ displays at up to 144 Hz. The video encoder supports 4K at 60 fps, while the decoder supports AV1.
The chip is designed for use with fast LPDDR5X RAM (9,600 Mbit/s) and UFS-4 storage. It features a 5G modem (Dual-SIM Dual Active) as well as support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.
The first smartphone to use the new Dimensity 8550 is already official – it is the Chinese version of the Honor 600 Pro.
