Google introduces Googlebook, an AI notebook based on Gemini
Google today announced a new series of Googlebook notebooks based on the Gemini processor and specifically designed for Gemini Intelligence. The software is a combination of Android and ChromeOS.
Instead of a cursor, Googlebooks have a magic pointer that users can activate by moving it. Gemini then provides context-sensitive suggestions and answers based on what the user is pointing at on the screen. For example, pointing at a date in an email will schedule an appointment, and selecting two images will display them together. The magic pointer also offers features for asking questions, comparing, and combining.
The new Android feature “Create my widget” will also be available. Users can create custom widgets using a Gemini prompt. Gemini scans the internet and connects to Google apps like Gmail and Calendar to create a personalized dashboard that can be used for widget creation.
Googlebooks run on Android
Since the new notebooks run on Android, switching between the laptop and an Android smartphone will be easier. Apps from a connected Android smartphone will be available on the Googlebook and will offer a similar range of functions to Apple’s iPhone screen mirroring.
Quick Access allows users to view, search, or insert files from a smartphone onto a notebook without requiring a transfer.
Google says it is working with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo on the development of the first Googlebooks and promises that each device will be “high-quality, made from premium materials,” and available in various shapes and sizes. Every notebook will feature the light bar pictured above, which Google describes as “a functional and aesthetic statement.”
Prices
Google hasn’t yet released pricing information, but given the use of the term “premium quality,” they could be more expensive than Apple’s recently released, affordable MacBook Neo. However, it’s also possible they’ll be priced similarly to the MacBook Neo, as the Apple notebook broke sales records shortly after its launch.
The first Googlebooks are expected to be released this fall.
