Huawei is among the pioneers of foldable phone technology and continues to experiment with new form factors – the Huawei Pura X Max is here. Its size falls between flip phones and book-shaped foldables, and the new version has grown significantly in size.

The Huawei Pura X Max features a 5.4-inch cover and a 7.7-inch internal display. The predecessors dimensions were 3.5 and 6.3 inches, respectively. The weight also increased from 194 to 229 g, while the thickness decreased significantly from 7.2 to 5.2 mm.

While the original Pura X featured a media-friendly 16:10 display, the X Max is more like a typical foldable phone such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 and features a rather square-shaped internal display. The resolution of 2,584 x 1,828 pixels corresponds to an aspect ratio of 14.1:10, which is slightly wider than the conventional 4:3 format. The external display (1,848 x 1,264 pixels) has almost the same aspect ratio. Both displays are LTPO 2.0 panels with a refresh rate of 1–120 Hz and 1,440 Hz PWM dimming.

As already announced in the teasers, the Huawei Pura X Max supports a stylus, the Huawei M-Pen 3 Mini. It’s “mini” because it has to fit the device’s slim profile. The stylus comes with a specially designed case. There’s also a case with a magnetic, fold-out stand.

The Huawei Pura X Max also features a larger battery with a capacity of 5,300 mAh, compared to 4,720 mAh in the previous model. The new Huawei smartphone supports wired fast charging at 66 watts and wireless fast charging at 50 watts.

The Huawei Pura X Max is powered by the Kirin 9030 Pro chipset. It promises 30% higher performance than the Kirin 9020 chip in the X. The chipset is cooled by a combination of a vapor chamber and graphene foil. As you probably know, Huawei no longer uses Android, but ships the Pura X Max with HarmonyOS 6.1 pre-installed.

Huawei Pura X Max is water and dust resistant

The X Max’s housing is made of an aluminum alloy. It also offers improved dust and water resistance: compared to the X with IPX8 (no dust protection), it now offers IP58/IP59 (dustproof, resistant to immersion and hot water jets). The external display is protected by second-generation Kunlun glass.

The main camera features a 50MP sensor with an OIS-enabled lens and a variable aperture (f/1.4–4.0). Additionally, there is a 50MP periscope lens with an f/2.2 aperture and OIS, as well as a 12.5MP ultra-wide-angle camera (f/2.2).

All three cameras use RYYB sensors with a yellow subpixel instead of a green one. In addition, there are two 8MP selfie cameras, one for each display. These are primarily intended for video calls – for optimal image quality, you can take selfies with the main camera.

The cameras utilize Huawei’s proprietary XMAGE image processing, which is supported by a second-generation color sensor.

This is an upgrade from the Pura X, which had a 50MP main camera with a fixed f/1.6 aperture, an 8MP telephoto lens, and a 40MP ultrawide lens. The higher resolution is advantageous when zooming.

Prices

Unfortunately, it is not yet known whether the Huawei Pura X Max will be available outside of China. In China, the smartphone is available in various colors.
