More than two years after launching its first over-ear headphones, Fairphone presents the new Fairbuds XL Gen 2 version. The second generation offers a redesigned look and new speakers, but the modular design remains.

The new 40mm dynamic drivers are backward compatible with the original Fairbuds XL. This means that users of the older model can also benefit from the updated drivers and optimized sound tuning.

Fairphone offers the left driver unit for €61.95 and the right one for €39.95. But it’s not just the drivers that are replaceable: all the important components of the new Fairbuds XL 2 can be replaced by the user. So if something breaks, you can order the exact replacement part and replace it yourself.

The user-replaceable battery is also easily accessible by opening the cover on the left side. It’s easy to remove as it’s not glued in place. The new model offers a battery life of 30 hours without ANC and 20 hours with ANC. That’s 5 hours more than the previous model.

The modular headphones can be connected to two devices simultaneously via Bluetooth 5.3 and feature improved noise cancellation with a reduction of up to 35 dB. Fairphone also advertises optimized wind noise reduction for clearer calls. The headphones support the AAC, SBC, and aptX HD audio codecs and are IP54 dustproof and waterproof.

Fairbuds XL Gen 2 prices

The Fairbuds XL Gen 2 are available in Forest Green and Horizon Black and cost €249 / £219 in Europe. They are expected to be released in the US later this month for $229.
