MediaTek Helio G200 with faster GPU and better video HDR is here

MediaTek is keeping its 4G chipset series alive, but the new Helio G200 isn’t a huge upgrade over the Helio G100. The new chip offers higher GPU clock speeds, better HDR video quality for the camera and new technology that improves the use of social media apps in areas with poor reception.

At its core, it is still mostly the same 6nm chipset as the Helio G99. The G100 added 200MP camera support, the G200 improves on this with 12-bit DCG support for better HDR in videos.

As before, the CPU has two Cortex-A76 cores running at 2.2GHz and six A55 cores running at 2.0GHz. However, the GPU, a Mali-G57 MC2, is now clocked at 1.1 GHz (previously 1.0 GHz). Not a big win, but given that it’s still using the old TSMC N6 node, you can’t expect much anyway.

Finally, the Helio’s 4G DC SAR technology improves G200 “the experience of popular social and messaging apps in remote areas and regions with weak mobile signals.” This is achieved by reducing latency by 30%, which is actually more common in Games than in TikTok and Instagram should be an issue. At the same time, the reception range is improved.

The Helio G200 also supports 1080p+ displays with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. It can be coupled with LPDDR4X RAM with up to 4,266 Mbit/s and UFS 2.2 storage and has a Cat. 13 DL 4G LTE modem, Wi-Fi 5 (ac) and Bluetooth 5.2 support.
