Qualcomm has just announced its latest premium mobile chipset – the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 4. The SM8735, as it’s known internally, is manufactured on TSMC’s 4 nm N4P process node and features the older Kryo CPU instead of the Oryon core found in the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite chip.

The CPU cluster of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 consists of one Cortex-X4 Prime core clocked at up to 3.2 GHz, three Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 3.0 GHz, two Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.8 GHz, and two Cortex-A720 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz. According to Qualcomm, the new chip is 31% faster than last year’s Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 while consuming 39% less power.

The chip also gets a new Adreno 825 GPU, which Qualcomm claims offers a 49% improvement on the graphics side compared to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3. You also get on-device ray tracing support and Snapdragon Elite Gaming features like Snapdragon Game Super Resolution 2.0 and Adreno Image Motion Engine 2.0.

The updated Qualcomm Hexagon NPU offers 44% better performance in on-device AI tasks. Qualcomm has also added an 18-bit Triple Image Signal Processor (ISP) that supports up to 320 MP camera sensors and 4K 60 fps HDR video recording.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 features an integrated Snapdragon X75 5G modem with maximum download speeds of 4.2 Gbps, but only supports the sub-6 GHz spectrum instead of the faster mmWave frequency bands. The chip also offers Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.0.

The new chip supports UFS 4.0 storage, LPDDR5X RAM, and USB 3.1 Gen 2 connectivity. It also features Qualcomm’s XPAN (Extended Personal Area Network) connectivity, which uses Wi-Fi for audio transmission and is already supported by some new wireless earbuds, such as the Xiaomi Buds 5 Pro. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 is expected to launch later this month on the iQOO Z10 Turbo. Other devices from Xiaomi, Oppo, and Meizu will follow soon.
