Huawei Pura X with revolutionary design is here
What would happen if you combined a book-style and a clamshell design? The answer is the Huawei Pura X, a brand-new smartphone that was just unveiled in China. It features a 6.3-inch display in a 16:10 portrait format. The cover display houses another, square 3.5-inch display and three cameras.
Huawei designed the new smartphone so that when unfolded, it can be rotated and used as a standard, albeit very wide, clamshell smartphone. When folded, however, the hinge is on the side.
When unfolded, the Huawei Pura X measures 143.2 mm in height and a whopping 91.7 mm in width. While short, it is significantly wider than any current smartphone. When folded, it measures 91.7 mm x 74.3 mm.
Both sides feature LTPO OLED panels with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The foldable screen achieves a peak brightness of 2,500 nits. The cover display offers various wallpapers, including live options with customizable animations. You can also use the camera and access messaging and health apps, calls, and the music player without having to open the smartphone.
You can also answer calls while folded. The earpiece is located right next to the LED flash, so the cover display faces the user’s face.
The Huawei Pura X features three cameras arranged in a row. There’s a 50 MP wide-angle camera with an f/1.6 aperture, RYYB sensor, and OIS, and a 40 MP f/2.2 ultra-wide-angle camera with another camera with an RYYB sensor. There’s also an 8 MP telephoto lens with 3.5x optical zoom and OIS. Next to it is the spectral imaging sensor, first used in the Mate 70 Pro series. Video calls are possible on the Pura X, and Huawei has integrated a 10 MP camera into the punch-hole of the main display.
The hinge features a classic teardrop design and is made of space-grade materials. Since Huawei is launching the Pura X in China, the device supports satellite connectivity, but only with Chinese satellites. This feature is also limited to certain storage models.
The Pura X has a dual-cell 4,720 mAh battery. It supports 66W wired charging and 40W wireless charging. The Pura X is also equipped with heat-dissipating elements, including a graphite plate. As is typical with Huawei, the chipset has not yet been announced. Huawei declines to officially comment on the chip situation, and its stance on the Pura X remains unchanged. The operating system is HarmonyOS 5.0, Huawei’s proprietary operating system based on a self-developed kernel.

The Huawei Pura X is available in three standard colors – black, white, and silver – as well as Collector’s Editions in Pattern Green and Pattern Red. Prices start at 7,499 CNY ($1,035/€955) for the base 12/256 GB version and go up to 7,999 CNY ($1,105/€1,020) for the 12/512 GB version. The 16/512 GB version costs 8,999 CNY ($1,240/€1,145), and the most powerful variant with 16 GB RAM and 1 TB storage costs 9,999 CNY ($1,380/€1,270).
The Huawei Pura X is also available in a Collector’s Edition, featuring two exclusive panel designs and available with 16 GB of RAM. The smartphone will go on sale in China starting tomorrow, March 21. Whether the foldable will also be sold internationally remains to be seen.
