Huawei Watch GT 5, GT 5 Pro with titanium and Watch D2 introduced

Huawei today introduced several new smartwatches with different focuses. Depending on the model, there are different mixes of design, battery life and features. What they all have in common, however, is the new TruSense health monitoring system, which the Chinese company had already shown in advance. The Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro is also available in a titanium version with a lightweight case and the Watch D2 with blood pressure measurements on the wrist is finally on the market.

Huawei Watch GT 5

The Huawei Watch GT 5 is available in two sizes like last year – 41 mm and 46 mm. Both retain the same screen sizes of 1.32 inches and 1.43 inches. The cases are made of 316L stainless steel and Huawei has worked to make them a bit slimmer. The 41 mm model, for example, is now 0.3 mm thinner than the Watch GT 4. There is a mix of metal, leather, plastic and woven straps to choose from.

For the Huawei Watch GT 5 in 46mm, blue is the main color, inspired by the sea. As before, the GT has a graduated bezel. The 41mm model, on the other hand, does away with the rotating ring in favor of more compact dimensions. The GT 5 series also has an improved antenna and a new positioning algorithm. According to Huawei, route accuracy has increased by 40%, distance accuracy by 30% and pace accuracy by 20%.

The Huawei TruSense system offers the usual heart rate and blood oxygen measurements, as well as sleep tracking. Huawei has expanded the sleep breathing detection function of the GT 4 series to include sleep apnea detection. The watches also offer health tracking for women. In addition, you can also record your emotions to track your emotional well-being. However, this feature will not be available in Europe.

Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro

The Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro comes in two sizes: 42mm and 46mm. The small version is 0.9mm thinner than the small GT 3 Pro (which was a 43mm model). As we hinted above, the Pro models feature titanium cases. The small 42mm model also features ceramic in the case and strap, while the large model uses titanium or fluoroelastomer for the strap. They also feature sapphire glass for the display.

The Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro also features an ECG that takes 30 seconds to give you ECG traces. The improved positioning accuracy is in line with the new focus on a superior running and cycling experience. The watches support offline maps with route previews that estimate elevation changes and show terrain details. There are also real-time directions, including segment-based navigation and course deviation alerts.

Trail running navigation uses offline maps and can guide you through complex terrain environments. The Pro also works with Komoot if you prefer to rely on their route planning. Once you reach the finish line, the watch displays a running form analysis – measuring ground contact time, vertical oscillation, balance and more.

Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro with freediving mode up to 40 meters

But that’s not all, the watches also track over 100 types of workouts. The Pro models also have a freediving mode with water resistance up to a depth of 40 meters (130 feet) with depth tracking and reminders. There is also an IP69K rating for resistance to hot water jets. Thanks to a special outer coating, they also resist salt spray corrosion.

The Pros have improved mapping features, including topographic maps with contour lines at 10m intervals (outside mainland China). Golfers might also enjoy this watch. There are over 15,000 golf maps available with 3D previews and precise directions. To keep track, you can use the integrated scorecard. The golf function will be available in 69 countries later this month.

The Huawei Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro have long battery life. The small watches (41 mm and 42 mm) last 5 days with the Always On Display activated and up to 7 days without. The larger watches (46 mm) manage 9 days with AOD and up to 14 days without. The Pros support wireless charging and can be fully charged in 60 minutes.

Huawei Watch D2

The Huawei Watch D2 is a special watch. It has an inflatable wrist strap and works just like the wrist cuffs that measure blood pressure. This offers more reliable measurements than the watches based on optical sensors. Approvals from the EU’s MDR and China’s NMPA also speak for the accuracy.

The cuff inflates at regular intervals both during the day and at night. However, the Huawei Watch D2 also has an optical sensor that measures heart rate – this uses less battery and puts no pressure on the wrist. There’s also an ECG and skin temperature sensors, so all the basic viral metrics are covered.

The Huawei Watch D2 has a rectangular 1.82-inch OLED display (408 x 480 pixels), which is larger than the 1.64-inch display on the original Watch D. The watch itself measures 48 x 38 x 13.3 mm and weighs 85 g. That’s reasonably impressive considering it houses an air pump and blood pressure sensor inside. For reference, the original Watch D measured 51 x 38 x 13.6 mm and weighed 40.9 g.

New Huawei Watch Ultimate

The Huawei Watch Ultimate was launched last year in two versions: blue and black. Now a third color is available: green.

The Green Edition features a two-tone nano-tech ceramic bezel surrounding the sapphire crystal glass. The Ultimate is also the first smartwatch to use zirconium-based liquid metal. Naturally, the range of straps has been expanded to include green options with a woven strap design, HNBR rubber and premium titanium options.

Pricing and availability

The Huawei Watch GT 5 series launches internationally today. The GT 5 starts at £230 (both sizes, but some colour/strap combinations are priced higher). If you order from the Huawei store in the UK between September 19 and October 22, you’ll get a free pair of Huawei FreeBuds 5i. As well as the company’s own store, Currys and Argos will also stock the GT 5 series. The GT 5 Pro series starts at £330 for the 46mm model and £400 for the 42mm model. In Europe, the Watch GT 5 starts at €250, while the GT 5 Pro costs €380 for the large 46mm model and €450 for the small 42mm model. The small model uses ceramic in the case and strap, so costs more.

The Huawei Watch D2 also launches today, priced at £350. It will be available from the Huawei Store in the UK (you’ll also get the FreeBuds 5i for free until October 22), as well as Currys and Argos. The European price for the D2 is €400. The Huawei Watch Ultimate isn’t new, but if you like what you see, you’ll want to save up €900. All Huawei smartwatches are fully compatible with Android, iOS, and of course EMUI smartphones.
