Instagram tests new dislike button

Instagram is testing a dislike button for comments, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri confirmed today. The dislike button is designed to give people a “private” way to signal that they aren’t happy with a particular comment.

Mosseri says the feature is currently just a test, but the goal is to “make comments friendlier.” If the test goes well, the dislike signal could be integrated into comment rankings to push unpopular comments further down the comments section of an Instagram post or reel.
Posts don’t have a dislike counter, so neither the author nor other commenters can see if a user dislikes a post. The dislikes serve as an internal signal and are hidden from users. Instagram is currently testing the feature with a limited number of users, a spokesperson told TechCrunch.
“We’re working on ways to help people have more control over their Instagram experience and what they see in the app. We’re testing a new button next to each comment on a Reel or Feed post that will allow users to privately signal that they’re not happy with that particular comment or don’t find it relevant. We’re testing this with a very small group of people first. Later, we may also test moving those comments further down in the comments section to improve the experience.”
Users who have access to the Dislike feature will see a downward-pointing arrow they can tap. This is similar to the downvote feature Reddit uses.
