OpenAI Prism: AI workspace for scientific collaboration is here

OpenAI has introduced Prism, a free, AI-powered workspace for scientists to write and collaborate on research. Prism is based on the latest GPT-5.2 model. It allows for an unlimited number of projects and contributors per project and is already available to everyone with a ChatGPT personal account. Organizations with ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and Education subscriptions will also offer it soon.

OpenAI explains that Prism aims to solve the common problem of writing scientific articles, revising arguments, managing equations and citations, and coordinating with collaborators being scattered across various independent tools such as editors, PDFs, LaTeX compilers, reference management programs, and separate chat interfaces. This constant back and forth can cause researchers to lose context and disrupt their concentration.
Prism aims to change all of that by serving as a central platform for all necessary functions. According to the official press release, it unites “drafting, revising, collaboration, and publication preparation in a single, cloud-based, LaTeX-native workspace.”

GPT-5.2 operates within the project itself and has access to the paper’s structure, equations, references, and surrounding context. Prism is based on Crixet, a cloud-based LaTeX platform acquired by OpenAI.
Researchers can use GPT-5.2 Thinking to chat, design and revise texts in the context of the entire document, search for and incorporate relevant literature, create, restructure and analyze equations, quotations and figures.
Furthermore, whiteboard equations or diagrams can be directly converted into LaTeX, collaboration with co-authors, students and supervisors in real time, direct changes to the document can be made, and optionally, language-based editing can be used to make simple changes without interrupting the writing or review process.
