Last month, WhatsApp began testing a small green dot on Android to indicate whether a contact is online. The Meta-owned company is now testing this feature on iOS as well. This revelation comes from WABetaInfo, who discovered the development in beta version 26.26.10.72 of the iOS app.

If you’re using WhatsApp as a beta user on iOS and have the latest version of the app installed, you’ll see a small green circle in the bottom right corner of a contact’s profile picture under “Contact Information” as soon as they are online. This works in real time; the green circle disappears as soon as the contact is offline.

Green WhatsApp dot is currently only displayed for contact information

WABetaInfo reports that the green dot is currently only displayed on the “Contact Information” screen, which is opened by tapping the contact’s photo. It would of course also be useful to have it in the chat list and the chat tab, but this is only the first beta version.

It’s also worth noting that the popular messaging app applies the same privacy rules to the green dot as it does to online status and “last seen” status. This means the green dot is not visible if a user has hidden their online status and “last seen” status from others.

This feature, which displays online status with a green dot, is currently only available to some beta users on Android and iPhone, and it is unclear when WhatsApp will release it to all users.
