WhatsApp has announced a new feature called “Message Translations,” which, as the name suggests, allows users to translate text messages in chats.

The “Message Translations” feature works with one-on-one conversations, group chats, and channels. When you see a message in another language, you can long-press it, tap “Translate,” and then select the desired language. The feature can also be downloaded for future translations. Android users also have the option to enable automatic translation for future incoming messages across the entire chat thread.

WhatsApp doesn’t upload chats

According to the press release, all translations are done on the device, meaning not even WhatsApp can see them.

The “Message Translations” feature is rolling out to iPhone and Android users in select languages, with more to follow.

It currently translates messages for Android users into English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic, while iPhone users can already translate messages into more than 19 languages can.
