WhatsApp brings AI summaries for messages

The AI summaries for chat messages remain private and not even WhatsApp or Meta can read them.

Last month, we learned that WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to summarize unread messages in chats and quickly catch up on the latest conversations. Development and testing of this feature are now complete, and the stable version has been officially announced.

The function is called „Message Summaries“ („Message Summaries“) and uses Meta AI to summarize unread messages in a chat “privately and quickly.” The following GIF shows how it works. Tap the number of unread messages in the chat, and WhatsApp will create a bulleted summary of the messages.

The “Message Summaries” feature uses Meta’s private processing technology, which allows Meta AI to create message summaries. WhatsApp claims that this technology also ensures that third parties cannot read your messages or summaries. Chat participants cannot see your message summaries either.

The “Message Summaries” feature is optional and disabled by default. You can use the “Enhanced Chat Privacy” setting to specify which chats can be shared with AI features.

So far, the “Message Summaries” feature is only available in the US and therefore only in English. Availability will be expanded to other regions and support additional languages later this year.
