Google Maps receives the new Gemini features “Ask Maps” and “Immersive Navigation”

In November, Google introduced Gemini in Google Maps for the first time. Now, the company is expanding the AI capabilities of Google Maps with “Ask Maps.” As the name suggests, you can ask questions about any location in Google Maps, and Gemini will answer you in an interactive dialogue.
According to Google, Gemini can “answer complex, everyday questions that Maps couldn’t previously answer.” You can ask literally anything—a charging station for your phone or a public tennis court with floodlights are just two examples. Simply tap the “Ask Maps” button.
Google Maps with Gemini
Gemini in Maps analyzes information from over 300 million places, including ratings from the 500 million-member Maps community. Results are personalized based on your previous searches or places saved in Maps, so you receive the most relevant recommendations.

Ask Maps
With Ask Maps, you can also make restaurant reservations, save places to a list, or share them with friends. And of course, you can get directions and navigate. Speaking of navigation: According to Google, “Immersive Navigation” is the biggest update for Maps in over ten years.
Immersive Navigation offers a redesigned interface and more intuitive navigation, keeping you focused and informed on the go – with real-world information and natural directions. The 3D view displays buildings, bridges, and the surrounding environment. Lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs are highlighted when needed.
According to Google, this “spatial understanding of your route” is made possible by “Gemini models.” These analyze real-time images from Street View and aerial photography to provide you with a precise view of the surroundings along your route.
Immersive navigation
Immersive navigation provides a more comprehensive view of your route. Intelligent zoom functions and transparent buildings make it easier to see ahead. Voice guidance is more natural, and you’ll even be informed about the advantages and disadvantages of alternative routes, such as a longer journey with less traffic or a faster one with tolls.
Google Maps also provides real-time updates on traffic disruptions along your route. Before you set off, you can preview your destination and surroundings with Street View and get parking recommendations. As you approach your destination, Maps highlights the building entrance, nearby parking options, and the correct side of the street.
Now for the bad news. Ask Maps is currently being rolled out in the US and India for Android and iOS. Immersive Navigation is being launched today in the US and is expected to roll out to compatible iOS and Android devices, CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with integrated Google Assistant in the coming months.
