Google Maps now works with Gemini while walking or cycling

Google Maps now allows you to talk to Gemini while following directions on foot or by bicycle. The latest update expands the existing conversational navigation feature of the AI chatbot in driving mode, which was introduced in November.

You can now ask Gemini questions hands-free, without leaving the navigation screen. For example, while walking, you can ask: “Tell me more about this area” or “Are there any cafes with restrooms along my route?” Cyclists can also check their estimated time of arrival without taking their hands off the handlebars. The following video gives an impression of how Gemini already works while navigating on the go.
According to Google, this feature solves the practical problem of typing while moving, which is cumbersome at best and dangerous at worst. The Gemini integration also supports follow-up questions. For example, you could ask for an affordable restaurant with vegan options and then inquire about parking.

In addition to route search queries, users can also issue navigation commands such as “Add stop,” “Show alternative routes,” or “Mute navigation.” Furthermore, practical questions can be asked, such as “Where do I need to turn next?” or “What’s the weather like at my destination?”
To activate Gemini during Google Maps navigation, tap the Gemini icon in the upper right corner or use the voice prompt “Hey Google”.
The feature is now available worldwide on iOS wherever Gemini is supported. Availability for Android will be rolled out gradually.
