iPhone driver’s licenses are coming to another US state
iPhone and Apple Watch users in Oklahoma will soon be able to store their driver’s licenses and ID cards in the Apple Wallet app. According to a new report, Apple is already working on implementing this feature in its backend systems.
In March, the Oklahoma House of Representatives passed a law allowing Service Oklahoma to issue mobile or digital versions of the aforementioned identity cards and driver’s licenses, and this is a consequence of that law.
These digital IDs and driver’s licenses do not replace the physical versions. People in Oklahoma still need the physical documents. The digital versions are a supplementary option and are accepted at select TSA checkpoints and some businesses. You can also use them in certain apps that require identity verification for services or purchases.
iPhone driving licenses planned in five more states
Other states planning to support digital IDs and driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet include Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Utah, and Virginia, with the latter two, along with Oklahoma, already spotted in Apple’s backend systems.
The states that have already implemented this feature are Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, and West Virginia.
